Popcycle was a
large pig approx. 10 or 11 years old and unspayed. She showed no
symptoms at all until the day she didn't eat for me. No fever, no discharge
she just didn't want to eat. She would take a grape or piece of cake but no
interest in her food.
The second day
she was taken to the vet. He could feel a problem in her
stomach but
couldn't tell just what it was. He opened her up for surgery
and the tumor layed the whole length of the incision line along the underside
of her belly. With two vets the surgery was completed and the tumor was
removed and all bleeders done and pig was grunting softly as they closed
the incision.
Only after rolling
her over did they run into problems. Vet called it
interfusion...massive blood flow with plak and impurities went to the heart
and she died on the table. This surgery can be a success and we have pigs
here that have survived it quite well. There is no option but surgery in this
kind of case. 09/2003
