Potbellied Pig FAQ's and Information Below: Nose Problems and Questions |
|
| Q:
I am very worried about my pet pot-bellied pig who has been very lethargic,
struggles to get up and has now developed a nose bleed. We live in quite
a remote area so help is scarce and I do not wish that he suffers. He
does eat although not as he used to and his palate is very white. Please
assist with any advise if you can. Debby - South Africa A: Hi Debbie, just got your email as it was hung up with the provider. Your pig needs to find a vet as soon as possible. Until you can find a vet do you have any antibiotics that you have been given for yourself on hand. I'm not sure if they will help him at this point but they sure won't hurt him. Has there been any coughing or sneezing with the bloody nose? There is a thing called AR or Atrophic Rhinitis that can cause the bloody nose but it is usually along with the sneezing. If you can't find a vet than see if you can't get him some antibiotics from somewhere and start him on them as soon as possible. Even if you
have a family Dr. that could write you a Rx for some. Anything but Baytril
will work by mouth. My personal preference is Ampicillin 500mg capsules
that can be pulled apart and sprinkled on the food. Baytril is impossible
to get into a pig unless its by injection so no point in even trying that
one. Please let me know how things go ok?
